'16 CB300F first bike, maintenance?

Been enjoying my first ride, and working through my 600 mile service. How often do folks lube their clutch cables? Other cables? Owner's manual mentions to lubricate the clutch cable periodically, but does not say how often. It doesn't mention anything about lubing throttle. Thoughts?

And, anyone have a good post or video they like as an example to get the job done on the clutch?

Welcome. I had a CBR250R for a year and a 300R for nearly three. In that time I never lubed my cables. Call me lazy but they were working fine during that time so why bother.
If they had started sticking I would have lubed them with some cable lube spray. Cables are best lubed completely removed so you can hold them vertical and use gravity to get the lube through the entire cable.
It's more common to lube a clutch or brake (if you have drum brakes) cable than throttle cables.
My recommendation to you is that unless you have a sticking cable problem then just leave them alone.

My clutch pivot pin didn't have grease from new and started to squeak after about a month.
If you pull your clutch lever in very very slowly it will judder slightly if it needs oiling.
If it feels smooth like hydraulic then you are fine.
I ride my bike in the rain during the rainy season so my gets lubed often.
A very simple quick job.
Wind back the adjusters both ends so that you can free the cable but leave it in on the bike.
If you have some Plasticine make a funnel around the top of the outer cable,or you can cut the corner off the bottom of a plastic bag and tape it to the outer cable.
Fill the funnel with oil and push/pull the inner cable up and down until the oil has gone from the funnel.
It will take a while to come out the other end so place a rag on the crankcase to soak up the oil.
Grease your pivot pin while the cable is out.

Edit: I think the throttle cable has a nylon inner sleeve and should not be oiled,mine is as smooth as new in nearly 3 years.

Another important lubrication point on the bike (which is not covered in either the Owner's Manual or the Service Manual, not sure why), is the shift pedal pivot... coating the pivot post with Anti-Seize compound (or regular bearing grease) once a year will ensure smooth shifting.

if no special gismo as mm demonstrates above,
sewing machine oil works, and penetrates cable..
best with cable off bike as kiwi recommends,
but you still do it with detached upper cable
lifted up for gravity assist, drop by drop
onto/into/down the cable..

What are the steps to disconnect the top of the clutch cable? I wanted to use a syringe with oil to inject it and then hold it up in the air and let gravity drip the oil down.

Would the same procedure work for brake cable also?

I will also use some grease on the shift pedal pivot.

My bike is 3 years old and probably has never had any of the cables lubed. Yikes!

Update: Found the steps in video below (for clutch cable only). Still need instructions for unhooking the top of the the brake cable and also the throttle cable

The brakes are operated by hydraulic fluid action, so no cables to lube.

Regarding the throttle cables: Probably best way to tackle it is to split the throttle housing carefully and have a look at how the cables are routed before disassembling fully.

There are literally dozens of videos addressing this maintenance procedure. IMO, Ari from "Motorcyclists Garage" always does a great job helping explain how-to's. I know it doesn't address your specific bike, but I'm sure you could find a bike specific video showing how to adjust/replace cables for a CB/CBR 300 if you care to. Hope this helps. This video certainly shows how to use a cable lube tool, but Ari includes a simple tip on how to lube the cable without one.

Mike.... help me out with the pivot post thing. Is the shift pedal pivot not sealed?

....also.... could you tell me the name of that cable luber thing. I’ve got a barn find bike that just may come in handy for......

It's typically referred to as a 'cable lube tool', or 'cable luber'. Any decent motorcycle shop should carry them in stock. A quick Google search will also list a bunch of them for sale. I see Amazon has one by Motion Pro for less than $10 USD.


Regarding the shift pedal pivot, no it's not sealed. Maybe you're thinking of the Shift Shaft coming out of the crankcase, which does have an oil seal.
