New to the CBR300R, making some videos

Hi guys,

I got my 300R a couple weeks ago off craigslist for pretty cheap since the motor is knocking. Looks like i'm going to pull the engine, and probably end up replacing the crank and rod bearings...we'll see once i get there!

I figured it would be cool to make some "how-to" style videos to follow and document my project. I've got a couple done and thought i'd share with you guys first before i formally add these to my youtube (right now they're still unlisted):

What do you guys think?

-Tommy

Welcome!

Regarding the engine knock, I'd have a dealer check your bikes VIN to see if the crankshaft recall was done.

Thanks! There's 5 videos in the playlist right now...just finished the one about how to remove the fairings yesterday. Currently doing a quick one for battery removal, and next will be doing how to drain the radiator, then how to drain the crank case, then throttle body removal...etc, etc....

Having fun with it so far

Yep! The recall service was done on this bike in 2016 (when it had just 2k miles on the clock...it's currently around 13.5k miles).

i actually did take it to my local honda powersports dealer for a formal diagnosis. I talk about that a bit in the 3rd video in the playlist:

Great video! Thanks for sharing this. You are getting close then to the service interval for "check valve adjustment" at 16k miles.

I wish someone would make a YouTube video about that one. I doubt I have the mechanical aptitude to do that task. But my biggest fear about paying a mechanic for that job is that they wont do ANYTHING and will lie and say that they did. Because how can I prove they actually took the engine apart to measure the valve clearance?

Glad you liked the video, and thanks for the valve clearance tip! I'm going to have the whole engine off of the bike and disassembled, so checking the valves should be almost zero additional effort. Right now, the video editing takes much longer than the actual mechanical tasks....so i can bet that it will be a while....but when i get to that stage, i'll definitely make a video!

Hey just curious what paddock stands are those that you got from Amazon? I'd like the rear one for quicker chain cleaning. Right now I only have a Harbor Freight roller that the rear wheel sits on. It's not ideal, but it's much better than moving the bike around the parking lot every few inches...
