He did say there may have been a tight spot in the chain that could be wearing out a part of the sprocket, but couldn't confirm without me bringing the bike in properly (and test riding re the noise).
He's one of the best reviewed mechanics where I am and he's booked out until January. Apparently it should only take 30min to check so I might call in at some point for him to take a closer look.
