So i had a full tank of 95 premium fuel left in the bike and kept it stored under cover for 1 month outside during winter.


Exactly after 1 month i took the cover off the bike and tried to start it up without success. All the electronics was working even the headlight so i did not think it was the battery being flat but just in case i charged the battery to full which took a few hours and tried it again without success. Basically when i hold the ignition to start the bike the engine is struggling to start and the RPM needle wouldnt move at all. I tried standing it up straight, moving the bike left and back, rolling it forwards and backwards in case its a fluid issue as well. STILL NO LUCK! :crying:


After some experimenting i managed to try again turning on the red engine safety switch, pull the throttle fully open four times and then held the ignition for 10 seconds which still failed but the needle jumped a tiny bit then dropped again struggling to start.:(


I then tried again holding the ignition whilst pulling on the throttle fast like i was reving it about 3-4 times and the engine finally started!!!! I kept the RPM needle above 2,500k till the engine warmed up otherwise it would stall again, but once it warmed up everything was working again like it should. Turned the bike off and starting the bike up pressing the ignition for 2 seconds without throttle worked just like it should.:D


I tried to start the bike up the next day to make sure it wouldn't happen again and didn't have any issues. Bike seems to be working normal again.:D

Can anyone explain why this happened on a EFI bike? Has anyone else had this issue?

Condensation, try starting it once a week when in storage and run it up to temperature. Works in the UK with our damp winter conditions.

Yes I had that problem, bike wasn't used for a few weeks while I had an op, i did not want to start, made all kinds of noises while cranking. It took about 6-7 attempts and rough as **** for about 10 miles, made some clanking noises as well then not long after it was deaded (crank went on it). I t was hooked up to a CTEK charger while not in use and had fresh fuel in it when it was parked up.
Never thought that would happen on a FI bike, mine was in a garage as well.

Water was my first thought as well. Doesn't matter what octane your fuel is, water will still sink in it, and the longer it sits, the more can be down there in your fuel pump.

95 octane fuel has about 10% ethanol which absorbs water and settles out. If you are letting it stand for any length of time add Fuchs Fuel conditioner. Also as dsimmo says start up once a week to keep good fuel in system. I always did that on my NT650 Deauville if I couldn't get out as much in winter. Worth running on 98 octane. Costs more but CBR300 is so frugal you don't notice the cost.

with phase separation during storage water and water/ethanol
sink to the bottom of a storage or your tank then cause stalling
when drawn into injectors/combustion chambers..

best way to avoid this pre-storage is use pure petrol..
also especially with ethanol blends, mix the blend
by moving it around in the tank.. taking it for a ride
now and then should have at least some mixing effects..
[start/stop, leaning should slosh it around in there]

basically, our 10.5:1 cr combustion chambers do not need,,
slow burning [ie, high octane rated] petrol..
our cr engines are designed for fast burning fuel..
slow burning - high octane fuel resists pre-ignition,
thus engine damage, in high cr performance engines,,
resulting in a general [wrong] association between
high octane and performance - in low cr engines..

here [aust] 95 and 98ron 'premium' petrol is ethanol free..
ethanol is added to the 91ron [about 87pon], thus motorists
are forced to pay for 'premium' to avoid ethanol.. a ripoff..

some outlets [here] do sell all fuels free of ethanol..
i have only ever used 91 pure petrol in my cbr250r
and two cbr300r's, all of which have started
first touch of the button, incl cold mornings..

apparently in usa there is 'recreational' 'rec-90'
for marine engine and small engines..
also for some aircraft engines..
[to avoid 'damage to their engines']

if you have pre-ignition for some reason
perhaps try 95/8ron as diagnostic and
to avoid serious engine damage..
otherwise use fast burning 91ron [87pon]..
- slow burning high octane fuel will not
increase your 10.5:1 engine performance -

So what's the solution if we don't put the fuel stabilizer in BEFORE sitting? :crying:

Mine has always started right up, no problem, so I didn't expect it would be an issue for a few weeks over summer. But it sat for three weeks, full tank, under cover, and now it's not wanting to start. Turns over fine, and it did start for two seconds yesterday, running roughly, before bogging down and dying. Keep draining the **** battery. I added stabilizer last night and rocked the bike around.

No signs of rodents in the airbox.

Other thoughts? Tips or tricks??

Syphon out all the fuel. Put in some fresh fuel with some Fuchs fuel additive. See if that helps. If not, you may have gum in the throttle body and need to clean it out.

Zeke, if your 2015 bike still has it's original battery??... I'll suggest you start looking for Autumn/Winter Sales Events at you favorite Vendors. Cause that original battery has well outlasted it's intended life. Just saying. :laugh:

Yep, it's original. And I was ignorant to motorcycle battery lifespans till I just did the reading. It once died with the bike off, key 'ON' for ~5 minutes, which seemed sketchy at the time but what do I know. Outside of this bad fuel incident, the bike always easily starts and the battery always has enough charge for the one crank. But I like your suggestion — I can get a lighty!

Should have pulled the trigger when you suggested it airhead! Few too many quick short trips in a row, two minutes with the lights on while I reset the clock, and I was walking home from the store tonight. Good grief...

Going with the 8-cell li-ion for its extra cranking power.

I got caught out a couple of times with the CBR by flicking the kill switch to shut the motor off before coming to a complete stop then forgetting to turn the key off when i pulled up. Both times this was done so I didnt disturb people late at night with my aftermarket muffler. But when i went to leave... you guessed it - flat.

The bike I have now only turns the side lights on when the key is on. You have to start the engine before the main headlights will work. Much better design.

Im still on my stock battery as well. But Im planning to buy that cheapo when the time comes. What i dont want to do is buy a Li-ion battery and end up selling the bike next year (or getting it stolen/wrecked) and since buyers wont give me any extra money for a Li-Ion battery I dont want to outlay the cash for one.

I bought my first Li-ion for the CBR250 and then when I went to sell the bike I just put the OEM battery back in and used the Li-ion in the CBR300 as well.
Depends what the battery requirements are for your next bike are but you are best to hang onto it.
