Just joined the CBR club all the way in New Zealand, with my first bike a 2017 CBR300R with 17,000kms
I'm excited to get learning, if anyone has some advice or modcons for my ride let me know!

Howdy mate, welcome to the forum. What part of NZ are you in? I used to have a '15 model CBR300R, didnt do anything to it performance wise other than change the pipe, change the gearing and strip off some emissions stuff. I did lighten it up a bit for better power to weight ratio. That's about it, they're pretty reliable engines.

Welcome from UK. Best mod for the CBR is to fit a 15T front sprocket. Makes all the gearing so much more useable. No need to alter chain length.
I had a CBR300R until 16 months ago; changed it for a CB300R dur to old age (me, not the bike).

I'm up in Auckland, I'm scouring around to find a pipe but coming up dry at the moment, would love to make it a but louder and lighter

Thanks for the clarification on the 15t, id already seen plenty of discussion about it but was unsure if to just bite the bullet and give it a go, it'd be nice not to be 10km/h out on the speedo too

If your having trouble finding a 15T sprocket then a tip is that they are the same fitment as the Honda XR250 trailbike.
Here's a link to the sprocket on the Motozone website, I've used these guys numerous times over the years:

Regarding aftermarket slip ons: Yeah unfortunately in NZ there is not a lot of scope inbetween the $899 Yoshimura and the cheap Chinese pieces of junk for $150 on ebay. Dont be tempted to go down the shorty route unless you want something obnoxiously loud that makes it sound like a cross between a lawn mower and a dirtbike.
Delkevic are a good middle ground option but bizarrely they dont make one for the 300R, only the 250R which annoyingly has a slightly different mount point and header length. I managed to make it work though by chopping a couple of inches off the 300R header but it never sat quite right. It needed a custom made link pipe between the header and the slip on with just the right bend. Not an impossibility but not sure how much a muffler shop would charge for such a service.
Here's the link to the Aussie seller anyways:

Thanks for that link! After doing some practice around the suburbs and a carpark I definitely think the 15t will be the way for me as I find first practically useless.
