i am looking for feedback/corrections/approval for wiring up heated grips. here is where my heads at . . .

here are the installation instructions for the Heat Demon grip heaters by symtec. i chose this product because i'm dead set on having stock grips.

attached is plan #1 . i am correct in thinking i do NOT want to simply tap connector into the the headlight? because then i put an extra 3 amps (from the grips) onto the headlight circuit, which is really meant for just the headlight.

also attached is plan #2 . i have an sae port with inline fuse to connect to the battery. i have this part from my deltran battery tender. i'll then get another sae port, solder and heat wrap spade connector it to a relay. i'll install the relay near the battery and power the relay by tap connector'ing the tail light. then wire the grips/switch from handlebars back to the battery area.

is plan #2 ok?

My heated grips are fed through a fusebox with a relay controlled supply from tail light. Also supplies power to LED DRLs and USB.
Power when ignition ON comes directly from battery.

Best way is to wire directly from battery with a fuse near to the battery.
Add an ignition controlled relay to make sure that you don't forget to turn the heater off.

I made my own, electronic switch, using a P-Channel Power MOSFET. Ok, here you need some
experience in electronics (or have one doing it for you). That one would be more reliable than a relay.

For NON-ABS bikes, an alternative to tapping into the tail lamp wire for the relay trigger is to take advantage of the unused ABS fuse slot in the stock fuse box.
At first, I soldered a piece of wire to a pin I cut from an ATM fuse. Then ran that through a fuse then on to the relay trigger terminal (86).

I then found that terminal BX2091c is a close match to the OEM fuse box terminals.

I ordered THIS from EBAY.
This terminal was slightly too wide, so I ground down the tabs (I took too much off, need to leave a little step)and it fits and locks into the stock fuse box.

You can now use the stock, empty ABS slot for your fused trigger wire.
